Join RST’s Language Partner Program!

Since it’s inception almost 1 year ago, RST’s Language Partner Program (LPP) has grown immensely to include the participation of dozens of clients and volunteers. The LPP helps refugees hone their English skills and provides essential one-on-one time in which volunteers help clients with preparation for job interviews. The LPP’s success means that more and more refugees are joining in and requesting help. We would love to get more volunteers involved! LPP is held at the RST office every Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:15 to 5:30 PM. If you are interested in participating, please contact Sarah Tooley at sarah.tooley@refugeeservicesoftexas.org.

Volunteering with refugees and other displaced persons can be very rewarding. You will probably end up learning more from them than they learn from you! As many of our current volunteers can attest to, the experience of volunteering with refugees is extremely rewarding. Our staff provide basic support for clients, but volunteers are the ones who really have potential to make a lasting impression in the lives of displaced persons. The only thing you need to do to get started is attend a volunteer orientation, as well as complete an application and background check. The Path to Self Sufficiency: Volunteer Opportunities 10/3 – 10/7

There is a familiar saying that goes like this: give a man a fish and you have fed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime. This saying could not be more true when it comes to the resettlement of refugees. They need our help in order to learn how to lead an independent life in the United States. One of the numerous ways we do this at Refugee Services is by providing clients with cultural orientations, as well as a bus orientation. Instead of driving a refugee to their appointment, we show them how to get there themselves on the bus so they can go without help the next time!

Because the office is so busy, we rely on the help of volunteers to conduct these bus orientations for our newly arrived clients.
